主題および達成目標

Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic spoken English, i.e., one-sided argument and summary, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic speaking and listening skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as reading and outlining, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. In-class activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below.

Week 1: Introduction to Academic Spoken English I
Week 2: Organization of a one-sided argument
Week 3: Basic presentation skills: Using notes
Week 4: Basic discussion skills: Keeping the discussion going
Week 5: Topic 1: Solutions to environmental problems (example)
Week 6: Topic 1 Discussion
Week 7: Topic 1 Model presentation; presentation preparation and practice
Week 8: Topic 1 Presentation
Week 9: Basic presentation skills: Speaking to the audience
Week 10: Basic discussion skills: Showing that you are listening
Week 11: Topic 2: Studying at UEC (example)
Week 12: Topic 2 Discussion
Week 13: Topic 2 Presentation
Week 14: Preparation for final presentations
Week 15: Final presentations

Homework will include preparing for a spoken summary, recording two spoken arguments, and preparing for and recording the final presentation.
