主題および達成目標
Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic written English, i.e., two-sided argument and summary, selected for students of science and engineering. The course fosters the basic academic reading and writing skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as discussion, required for achieving students' communicative goals. In-class activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below.

Week 1: Introduction to Academic Written English II
Week 2: Basic writing mechanics review
Week 3: Topic 3: Web 2.0 (example)
Week 4: Basic summary skills (3): paraphrasing
Week 5: Basic summary skills (4): editing and cutting what is unnecessary
Week 6: Peer review of summaries
Week 7: Organization of a two-sided argument
Week 8: Topic 4: Space Colonies (example)
Week 9: Linguistic register
Week 10: Coherence + cohesion
Week 11: Writing the counter argument paragraph
Week 12: Writing the rebuttal
Week 13: Writing the concluding paragraph
Week 14: Practice writing the reference list
Week 15: Peer evaluation of two-sided arguments

授業時間外の学習
There will be homework, preparation, and/or self-study assignments every week. Students are expected to complete all assignments on time. Students may not receive credit for late assignments.

There is a tutorial class on Tuesday, period 5, for students who have difficulty understanding the class content. Contact your teacher if you would like to attend the tutorial class. Students who attend the tutorial class are still required to attend their regular class.
