主題および達成目標
Students in this course will understand the components of a two-sided argument, an academic genre selected for students of science and engineering, and how to prepare and deliver oral presentations based on this genre. Students will also continue to develop discussion skills needed to actively participate in an academic discussion. The course fosters the basic academic speaking and listening skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as reading and technical writing, required for achieving students' communicative goals.

Week 3: Basic presentation skills: Keeping the audience's attention
Week 4: Basic discussion skills: Asking follow-up questions
Week 5: Topic 1: Building a better world (example)

Week 7: Topic 1 Model presentation; presentation preparation and practice
Week 8: Topic 1 Presentation
Week 9: Basic presentation skills: Concluding the presentation

This instructor has taught at universities in the U.S. for many years. Students are strongly encouraged to actively participate in discussion and other forms of appropriate oral exchanges during class hours.

There will be homework, preparation, and/or self-study assignments every week. Students are expected to complete all assignments on time. Students may not receive credit for late assignments.

Two-sided argument(s): 40%
Discussion(s): 30%
In-class performance: 20%

There is a tutorial class on Tuesday, period 5, for students who have difficulty understanding the class content. Contact your teacher if you would like to attend the tutorial class. Students who attend the tutorial class are still required to attend their regular class.
