Building on what they have learned in Academic English for the Second Year I, students in this course will understand the components of a scientific research report following the IMRaD structure. This course focuses on how to write the Introduction and Discussion sections of a written research paper, how to write the abstract of such a paper, and how to prepare an effective slideshow for a research presentation. This course fosters academic skills necessary to perform research and communicate research findings, including writing, presenting, and critical thinking skills. This will be accomplished by conducting one or more research projects, either individually or in a group, and writing at least one research paper and giving at least one research presentation. Activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers.

There will be homework, preparation, and/or self-study assignments every week. Students are expected to complete all assignments on time. Students may not receive credit for late assignments.

Written research paper(s): 40%
Research presentation(s): 30%
In-class performance: 20%
Other assignments and activities: 10%

There is a tutorial class on Tuesday, period 5, for students who have difficulty understanding the class content. Contact your teacher if you would like to attend the tutorial class. Students who attend the tutorial class are still required to attend their regular class.
