主題および達成目標
This class is an advanced class offered to the following types of students:
1. Students whose English grades are above average.
2. Students who have plans to go overseas to study or conduct internship OR students who have returned from overseas study or overseas internship.
3. Students who high motivation for studying English and would like to challenge oneself regardless of students' English levels.
4. Students in special programs such as GLTP.
The class limited to 30 students and will be conducted in Period 5 on Fridays. However, the schedule of this class could be re-arrangement upon agreement of all students and the teacher.
This class aims to cover the following common goals of Basic English for Science (BES, Technical English in the spring) (see below) and meet the diversified and individualized needs of the registered students such as research paper reading, attending and presenting at international conferences, academic tasks of overseas universities, application to overseas study programs, internship English, and culture-related topics important for science and engineering students who plan to study or work overseas in the near future, etc. Hence, this class keep a certain level of flexibility to cover the real-life needs of students.

Common Goals of BES:
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the basics of English language for science and engineering with a thorough review of the major academic skills covered in the compulsory English courses in the first and second year English curricula, such as skills for group discussion, critical thinking, academic reading, academic writing (accuracy and fluency), academic presentation and other related areas. Building knowledge of technical vocabulary, and developing summarizing skills will also be addressed in this course. This course adopts a student-centered approach to teaching methodology and genre-based approach to subject content, and builds foundation for Intermediate Technical English in the Fall semester.

As of the Spring Semester 2025, the textbook and other teaching materials of this class are uploaded to the WebClass. There are no textbooks for students to purchase for this course. All textbook and teaching materials of this course are copyrighted and should not be downloaded to share with anybody outside of the Technical English program.
Out of all the units of the textbook, some units are compulsory for study and the program-wide-test. The details of the required units will be provided by the class teacher.

Week 1: Guidance. QuickWrite
Week 2: Genre-based knowledge on the structures and inner organizations of the reading materials. Get 100 Word List. QuickWrite.
Week 3: How to ask good questions about a reading, in group discussions and to peers' opinions. Large group discussion strategies. QuickWrite.
Week 4: Comprehension-based strategies. Expression of opinions, negotiation and persuasion. QuickWrite.
Week 5: Thinking/Cognitive and reflection-based reading strategies. QuickWrite.
Week 6: Short oral reports (1). Q&A skills. QuickWrite.
Week 7: Short oral reports (2) Program-wide Test on reading (PWT-R).
Week 8: Oral report of summaries to peers; Peer evaluation of summaries. Note taking skills. QuickWrite.
Week 9: Basic scientific writing: definition, descriptions of various experiments and procedures. QuickWrite.

Students will be assessed based on the following criteria:
Class participation and attitude: 20%; Homework: 10%; PWT-R: 10%; Oral reports: 10%; PPT Presentation: 20%; Writing assignments (Summary, etc.): 20%; Writing Fluency (minimum 12 QuickWrites): 10%
