Multicellular organisms, including human, are composed of a variety of differentiated cells, each of which has specialized function(s). Analogously, an individual cell is an assembly of a variety of biological molecules, each of which has specialized functions(s). In this class, we will learn what kind of interactions enables the cells to express their highly specialized functions in astonishingly sophisticated ways, and how each function of multicellular organism is accomplished on the basis of many types of interactions between specialized cells.

Type (Ca): Japanese-based course with English materials
Lectures will be focused on the subjects about the molecular mechanisms underlying various cellular functions.
Wk 1. Fundamental structures and molecules of the cell: cell membrane, organelle, cytoskeleton, protein, lipid
Wk 2. Structure and function of proteins (1): protein structure, intracellular interaction, intercellular interaction, phosphorylation
Wk 3. Structure and function of proteins (2): membrane protein, ion channel, transporter
Wk 4. Structure and function of biological membranes: lipid bilayer, membrane transport, selective permeability
Wk 5. Gene expression: transcription, translation, protein folding, sorting, subcellular compartment
Wk 6. Intracellular transpor: vesicular transport, endocytosis, exocytosis, cytoskeleton
Wk 7. Cell proliferation and cell death: cell division, cell cycle, apoptosis, cancer
Wk 8. Intercellular signaling: signal molecule, hormone, neurotransmitter, receptor
Wk 9. Intracellular signaling: G protein, second messenger, protein kinase
Wk 10. Cell motility: cilia and flagelle, muscle contraction, motor protein
